UK performer Aakash Odedra reveals his new work Samsara as Asia TOPA in 2020.
Inspired by the classic Chinese novel Journey to the West, Samsara traces the steps we take, both forward and backward, in search of our higher selves.
Created and performed by international dance artists Odedra and Hu Shenyuan, Samsara merges mythological storytelling with personal experience.
Drawing on thinking and imagery at the heart of Buddhist philosophy, it explores some of the 81 obstacles and 6 states of mind that can hold us back. Epic mythological storytelling merges with personal experience and anecdote from two globally opposite perspectives, in a highly visual landscape.
Featuring the live music of Nicki Wells, immerse yourself in the energy and skill of these two extraordinary soloists, in this epic world premiere.

About Aakash Odedra
Described by The Guardian as “a beautiful performer”, Odedra has attracted global attention for both his virtuoso Kathak performances and his contemporary choreography. Odedra was born in Birmingham and trained in the classical Indian dance styles of Kathak (Nilima Devi, Leicester and Asha Joglekar, India) and Bharat Natyam (Chitraleka Bolar, Birmingham and Chhaya Kantaveh, India). Odedra incorporates his classical training in a unique synthesis with contemporary dance, both in his choreography and his creations with other choreographers.
