British Council Australia is delighted to partner with the Powerhouse Museum in bringing renowned Moroccan-British artist Hassan Hajjaj to Australia for Sydney Design Week this September.

Sydney Design Week unites visionary designers, architects, and artists who are shaping alternative futures. This year's theme, "In Between Worlds," features events across the city, curated by Creative Director Keinton Butler, Senior Curator at Powerhouse, in collaboration with Amaia Sánchez-Velasco from GRANDEZA STUDIO.

Hassan Hajjaj is celebrated for his captivating and vibrant works that blend contemporary art, fashion, and cultural identity. His diverse background profoundly influences his art, creating a unique fusion of North African tradition and Western popular culture. Hajjaj's works are featured in the permanent collections of prestigious institutions such as the Brooklyn Museum, the British Museum, and the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi. In 2020, Vogue commissioned Hajjaj to photograph Billie Eilish, showcasing his own clothing label, Andy Wahloo.

During his visit to Sydney, Hajjaj will participate in an innovative industry exchange project with local emerging photographers with Powerhouse Photography. This initiative aims to create a dynamic platform for local photographers to learn from and collaborate with established international practitioners.

The British Council is dedicated to fostering collaborations between artists and organisations, facilitating the exchange of creative ideas, and showcasing works to diverse audiences. We believe in the transformative power of artistic and cultural expression to address global challenges and create positive change.

Hajjaj will also discuss his maximalist approach to photographic practice during a free event at Parramatta Town Hall on September 19. His work, which intersects performance and cultural identity, pushes the boundaries of portraiture across art, design, and cultural commentary. Hajjaj champions local perspectives through social encounters and community-building, challenging conventional notions of representation.
